The Story Behind the Canvas
There is an expansive, elevated clarity that washes over the bluffs of the peninsula when the morning sun completely clears the horizon. "Above the Nicolet Canopy" is a visual translation of that sweeping, panoramic perspective from the high lookout points down toward the distant waters of the bay. Rather than a dense forest study, this landscape captures a vast, open window of crisp, morning atmosphere—where a shorter, windswept pine silhouette stands as a quiet witness to a massive sky completely flooded with pure, golden light.
Artisan Details & Texture
This original oil landscape on canvas masterfully balances a wide, airy expanse with rich material weight. The composition features a deliberate combination of exceptionally smooth, blended brushwork through the radiant sky gradients and heavy, physical palette knife applications across the foreground foliage. A structured palette knife technique was used exclusively to sculpt the crisp highlights on the tree crowns and the rocky bluff edges, creating a beautiful tactile contrast that dynamically catches a room’s shifting light.
A Visual & Musical Score
This artwork was created alongside a custom, original piano solo inspired by the open, sunny values of the canvas. Composed at the piano sitting directly beside the studio easel, the score mirrors the breathtaking vista with a bright, major key arrangement featuring floating arpeggios that gracefully mimic light filtering through the pine canopy.
