The process

I offer human portraits in the medium of charcoal, soft pastels, and oil paints on canvas.
I use only the highest quality archival materials.

Soft pastels, and oil paint portraits require more time and are more detail oriented. Charcoal sketches are done in sepia tones, or black and white. They require less time, which is reflected in the price.

I work from photos. I prefer to take them myself but if this is not an option I will require you to take 3 or 4 high quality images. It is especially important for portraits of people that you supply me with high resolution photos that show the accurate features of your chosen model. When choosing your reference photograph please make sure that they are taken with a good light source. If you would like your model smiling, please ensure that the reference photo shows the person with a closed mouth smile. (Teeth in general don't look very flattering in a painting)

For soft pastel or oil painting on canvas portraits,

I will invite you to offer your opinion halfway through the process.
That will be the time when you can request an alteration if needed.

After that I will work on your commission until your portrait/painting is finished.
Each pastel painting is mounted on an archival foam board and matted. It is not framed. If you would like your painting framed by me, there is an additional cost dependent on the chosen size. Oil paintings are painted on canvas, and will be framed. There will be an additional charge for the frame. The framing option will be decided individually for each portrait depending on the style of portrait, and the preference of the client.

For the simpler, charcoal sketch option I also work from a photograph but it is a straight forward process without any involvement from the client. Once the image is chosen I work on it until it's finished without the option of client offering any feedback. All decisions are made by me and the portrait comes as painted.

Pastel paintings, and charcoal sketches are mounted on an archival foam board but sold not framed. Both mediums need to be framed behind the glass before you can display them. You can purchase your pastel painting/charcoal sketch framed by me for an additional cost
(see the information), take it to the professional framer, or frame your painting yourself if you are confident and knowledgeable on how to do it.
